The Earth is Enough
I cast my line and felt the
tug of the cold water
against my thighs.
Always that tug, that
urgency of motion, of life
ongoing, resolute. I lost
all sense of time, of place,
of everything.
Concentration absorbed
me. Never had I felt such
consoling aloneness.
There in the dark, cold
water, the sun creeping
up the far side of the
mountains, setting the sky
on fire, was the first time I
felt it, that gripping chill
that sets every muscle
jumping, that shuddering
that separates one
moment from the next ,
that signals the passing
from one kind of life to a
